TURKISH MINISTER OF HEALTH CALLS ON THE PRIME MINISTER

Turkish Health Minister Dr. Fahrettin Koca called on Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif in Ankara today. During the meeting, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation in the health sector.

Prime Minister appreciated President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for transforming the health system in Turkey over the last two decades. He recalled several joint initiatives undertaken by the Turkish government in Pakistan in the health sector, especially in health services, pharmaceuticals, digital health, and training and capacity building of medical professionals.

Prime Minister greatly admired Turkish generosity witnessed during the 2005 Earthquake and 2010 floods. He particularly appreciated the establishment of Recep Tayyip Erdogan Hospital in Muzaffargarh following massive floods in Pakistan.

While congratulating the commendable handling of COVID-19 by Turkey, the Prime Minister noted that the two countries should continue to address health and economic challenges arising from the pandemic and step-up cooperation in vaccine development.

The Prime Minister advised the Turkish-Pakistan Joint Working Group (JWG) on Health to undertake in-depth discussions on various aspects of bilateral health cooperation. He underscored the importance of following up on various initiatives including collaboration in the establishment of pathology labs, enhanced functioning of Pakistan Kidney Liver Institute (PKLI), and automobile ambulances.

Turkish Health Minister highlighted the potential for enhanced collaboration in various aspects of the health field, such as manufacturing of medical equipment and pharmaceuticals, health tourism and quality control. He indicated that a team of Turkish Health Ministry will visit Pakistan in the near future. The Health Minister also informed that a “Pak-Medica Expo and Business Forum” will be held in Pakistan in October this year. Meanwhile, it was agreed, that the two sides will remain engaged on agreed areas of cooperation through the Joint Working Group on Health.

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DR. ARIF ALVI ON THE OCCASION OF THE RIGHT TO SELF-DETERMINATION DAY

Every year, on the 5th of January, we renew our support for the right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. On this day in 1949, the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) unanimously adopted a resolution affirming the right to self-determination of the Kashmiri people through a free and impartial plebiscite under the auspices of the United Nations.

The right to self-determination is a cardinal principle of international law, upheld in numerous core United Nations Treaties, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. For decades, it has been reaffirmed by the UN General Assembly in its annual resolution on self-determination. However, the last 76 years of India’s occupation of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) are a sad story of repression of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

India is trying to consolidate its occupation of IIOJK. The Indian Supreme Court’s judgement of 11 December 2023 on the status of this disputed territory is the latest step in this direction. India is trying to subjugate the Kashmiris through such oppressive tactics further. It continues to deny their inalienable right to self-determination and live with freedom and dignity.

Today’s commemoration is aimed at reminding the international community of its responsibility towards the oppressed Kashmiri people. The United Nations must honour the commitments that it made 75 years ago and support the Kashmiri people’s struggle for self-determination.

Pakistan remains determined to play its role in supporting the right to self-determination of Kashmiris through a free and impartial plebiscite as per the United Nations Security Council resolutions. Our strong and steadfast moral, political and diplomatic support for the Kashmiri people will continue till the realisation of this inalienable right.
